WashPod provides transportable, off-the-grid laundry and shower facilities to the previously homeless of Portland. This allows houseless job seekers to look and smell qualified for a job during an interview, as well as give them confidence.
I managed a five person electrical team. We wired solar panels to a control board that charged a large battery array. This in turn powered lights, a washer and dryer, water pumps, and a water heater. A backup propane generator was also included to ensure year-round operation in Portland’s cloudy climate.
In 2018, WashPod’s first year of operation, WashPod was awarded a Finalist award in the Lexus Eco Challenge: a $10,000 grant to further its expansion.
WashPod was most recently installed at the Right 2 Dream Too (R2D2) pod village, a non-profit organization that provides a place for Portland's unhoused community to sleep.
